The Bend Motorsport Park history
Located in Tailem Bend, one hour south-east of Adelaide, The Bend Motorsport Park started from humble beginnings as a Mitsubishi test track. By 2015, South Australia’s largest private company, the Peregrine Corporation took interest in the site for it’s new motor racing venture, and lodged a $100 million joint redevelopment project with the South Australian Government, with construction approved to begin in early 2016.
Originally titled the South Australian Motorsport Park, by the time construction began, the name ‘The Bend’ stuck, reflecting the local community as well as it’s iconic, challenging corners.
In April 2018, Shannons Nationals became the opening motorsport event held at The Bend Motorsport Park, with the Australian Superbikes and Asia Road Racing Championship combined event quickly following.
However, the best was yet to come with the annual visit of the Supercars Championship being held on The Bend’s ‘International Circuit’ for the first time. This event has grown to a 500km endurance round, taking out Sandown Raceway from its position as the traditional warm up for the Bathurst 1000.
The Bend Motorsport Park raceway construction
The Bend was built without incident. Lucas Construction won the contract and started construction in early 2016. By February 2017, the development of a 34-garage pit lane complex began—but it came with an exciting twist. The four story building also contains a 4-star Rydges hotel, with rooms and balconies overlooking the pit lane and track.
If you purchase a driving or hot lap gift voucher for you or a friend, why not make a weekend of it and enjoy all the awesome things to do on the nearby Murray River? You can stay at the awesome Rydges Pit Lane Hotel and be right in the heart of the racing action
The Bend Motorsport Park circuits
As well as boasting some of the best racing facilities in the Southern Hemisphere, The Bend Motorsport Park is renowned for its many circuits, totalling eight exciting configurations which have been licensed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for car racing and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) for motorcycle racing.
The GT circuit
The challenging and exhilarating GT circuit is 7.77km long, the second longest permanent race track in the world. Suitable for GT and endurance racing, it also makes for an awesome drive experience for visitors coming for the V8 Supercar driving experience and hot laps.
The International Circuit
At 4.95km, the International Circuit sees the most on-track action. Home to the Supercars and Superbikes, it’s also the ideal track for state and club racing as well as private hire.
West and West Plus
The West and West Plus configurations come in at 3.41km, but also include the main pit straight, making it the perfect run for short track events such as sprints, cruising events, driver training and club racing.
Due to having its own smaller pit, the 3.93km East Circuit is it’s own circuit that runs independently from the West Circuit. As well as being utilised for drifting and testing, it’s also a great track for V8 Supercar drives and hot laps.
Besides these five main configurations, the West Circuit can facilitate three more configurations by dividing into the North Loop, South West Loop and a sprint variant, all of which are perfect for short track events and drive experiences.
